My main idea is What does it mean to be an American?
I think that to be an american you only have to live in America...or call America your home
the color of your skin, your religion, your beliefs shouldn't affect whether or not you are an American.

I think this is a good idea...
And maybe you could find articles to supprt both your side as well as others to show that there are many ideas of what it means out there.
American Born Chinese will be very useful when talking about this.
It's a good idea...honestly I can't even come up with my own thesis...so I'm not too much help.
Something you might want to look at is how when you ask someone their nationality who live here they usually say Italian, Polish, Mexican,German etc.
You can focus in on how [if you even think this] these people can call themselves all different nationalities and still categorize themselves as Americans. [Once again idk if you think this or not...but from your post i thought you might]
You could take a survey by just asking people what nationality are you, see their answers and then ask if they are Americans, because most people won't say they are American to the first answer? I'm not sure...Kind of just rambling.
good ideas, just put them in the form of a question that can be answered in the paper!!
